Generating Web Site Statistics With AWStats & JAWStats On Debian Lenny

Post date: June 27, 2010, 20:06 Category: Miscellaneous Views: 5591 Comments
Tutorial quote: This tutorial explains how you can generate statistics for your web site with AWStats and JAWStats on a Debian Lenny web server. AWStats is a free powerful and featureful tool that generates advanced web server statistics. JAWStats runs in conjunction with AWStats and produces clear and informative charts, graphs and tables about your website visitors. AWStats is able to create graphical web pages for the statistics, but JAWStats presents this data in a much nicer way - it's much better organized and makes use of Ajax and Flash.

Rescuing systems using the Debian snapshot server

Post date: September 18, 2006, 14:09 Category: System Views: 5900 Comments
Tutorial quote: One of the unofficial Debian project resources which doesn't get the attention it deserves is the Debian Snapshot site. The site contains a mirror of old Debian packages, which can be very useful for system recovery.

In most normal cases you won't ever need to use it, unless you're wanting to compare two different package versions to see changes, or do other non-standard things. However when you do need to use it you'll learn what a big lifesaver it is!

The biggest use for the site, for me, has been for recovering from broken package updates. Whilst these are rare in the Debian Stable and Testing releases they can be an issue when running Debian unstable.

Splitting Apache Logs With vlogger

Post date: June 17, 2007, 22:06 Category: Software Views: 4046 Comments
Tutorial quote: Vlogger is a little tool with which you can write Apache logs broken down by virtual hosts and days. With vlogger, we need to put just one CustomLog directive into our global Apache configuration, and it will write access logs for each virtual host and day. Therefore, you do not have to split Apache's overall access log into access logs for each virtual host each day, and you do not have to configure Apache to write one access log per virtual host (which could make you run out of file descriptors very fast).

Virtual Users/Domains With Postfix, Courier, MySQL, SquirrelMail (Debian Lenny)

Post date: March 5, 2009, 12:03 Category: Installing Views: 5742 Comments
Tutorial quote: This document describes how to install a Postfix mail server that is based on virtual users and domains, i.e. users and domains that are in a MySQL database. I'll also demonstrate the installation and configuration of Courier (Courier-POP3, Courier-IMAP), so that Courier can authenticate against the same MySQL database Postfix uses. The resulting Postfix server is capable of SMTP-AUTH and TLS and quota. Passwords are stored in encrypted form in the database. In addition to that, this tutorial covers the installation of Amavisd, SpamAssassin and ClamAV. I will also show how to install SquirrelMail as a webmail interface so that users can read and send emails and change their passwords.
