Virtual Hosting With PureFTPd And MySQL (Incl. Quota And Bandwidth Management) On Fedora 7

Post date: July 10, 2007, 23:07 Category: Installing Views: 3890 Comments
Tutorial quote: This document describes how to install a PureFTPd server that uses virtual users from a MySQL database instead of real system users. This is much more performant and allows to have thousands of ftp users on a single machine. In addition to that I will show the use of quota and upload/download bandwidth limits with this setup. Passwords will be stored encrypted as MD5 strings in the database.

How To Back Up MySQL Databases Without Interrupting MySQL

Post date: May 12, 2007, 23:05 Category: System Views: 4336 Comments
Tutorial quote: This article describes how you can back up MySQL databases without interrupting the MySQL service. Normally, when you want to create a MySQL backup, you either have to stop MySQL or issue a read lock on your MySQL tables in order to get a correct backup; if you do not do it this way, you can end up with an inconsistent backup. To get consistent backups without interrupting MySQL, I use a little trick: I replicate my MySQL database to a second MySQL server, and on the second MySQL server I use a cron job that creates regular backups of the replicated database.

Passwords are stored in encrypted form in the database. In addition to that, this tutorial covers the installation of Amavisd, SpamAssassin and ClamAV so that emails will be scanned for spam and viruses. I will also show how to install SquirrelMail as a webmail interface so that users can read and send emails and change their passwords.

Installing and Configuring Exim4

Post date: February 25, 2006, 12:02 Category: Network Views: 3753 Comments
Tutorial quote: Installion of Exim4 from the latest Debian GNU/Linux packages is easy. The installation is now based around debconf. If you are upgrading from a simple Exim3 configuration, you can use exim_convert4r4 to convert your configuration file to the new format. If you used the previous version of this guide, which covered Exim3, the conversion should succeed without incident. I intend to discuss configuration via debconf, including setting up local delivery to Maildir format, handling local domain email, and configuring smarthosting for outbound email.

Preventing MySQL Injection Attacks With GreenSQL On Debian Etch

Post date: October 28, 2008, 12:10 Category: Security Views: 4305 Comments
Tutorial quote: GreenSQL (or greensql-fw) is a firewall for MySQL databases that filters SQL injection attacks. It works as a reverse proxy, i.e., it takes the SQL queries, checks them, passes them on to the MySQL database and delivers back the result from the MySQL database. It comes with a web interface (called greensql-console) so that you can manage GreenSQL through a web browser. This guide shows how you can install GreenSQL and its web interface on a Debian Etch server.

Installation/Configuration of Last.fm Scrobbler/Player for linux

Post date: April 20, 2009, 09:04 Category: Multimedia Views: 5315 Comments
Tutorial quote: Last.fm is a UK-based Internet radio and music community website, founded in 2002. It claims over 30 million active users based in more than 200 countries.

Using a music recommender system called "Audioscrobbler", Last.fm builds a detailed profile of each user's musical taste by recording details of all the songs the user listens to, either on the streamed radio stations, the user's computer or some portable music devices. This information is transferred to Last.fm's database ("scrobbled") via a plug in installed into the user's music player. The profile data is then displayed on the user's profile page. The site offers numerous social networking features and can recommend and play artists similar to the user's favorites.

Automating Perl Database Applications

Post date: May 1, 2005, 17:05 Category: Programming Views: 3864 Comments
Tutorial quote: This article describes how Perl is used to generate Perl CGI code using the multi-platform CGIScripter application. The resulting output code automates SQL table creation commands (in this example, for a MySQL database), HTML pages and Perl code. Web security issues, data validation and image handling functionality are incorporated into the resulting Perl code. By automating the development of Perl CGI scripts, even entry-level developers can create CGI scripts that contain most of the commonly requested features in a short period of time--without manually writing any code.
