Running Magento 1.6.0.0 On Nginx (LEMP) on Debian Squeeze/Ubuntu 11.04

Post date: September 20, 2011, 07:09 Category: Installing Views: 6480 Comments
Tutorial quote: This tutorial shows how you can install and run Magento 1.6.0.0 on a Debian Squeeze or Ubuntu 11.04 system that has nginx installed instead of Apache (LEMP = Linux + nginx (pronounced "engine x") + MySQL + PHP). Magento is an open-source, feature-rich ecommerce platform; I will use the Magento Community Edition here which is licensed under an open source certified license (OSL v3.0). nginx is a HTTP server that uses much less resources than Apache and delivers pages a lot of faster, especially static files.

Apt-Cacher-NG - HTTP download proxy for software packages

Post date: February 24, 2009, 07:02 Category: System Views: 4622 Comments
Tutorial quote: Apt-Cacher-ng is a software package that keeps a cache, on the disk, of Debian/Ubuntu Packages and Release files. When an apt-get like client issues a request for a file, Apt-Cacher intercepts it and if the file is already cached it serves it to the client immediately, otherwise it fetches the file from the Internet, saves it on the cache, and then serves it to the client. This means that several Debian machines can be upgraded but each package need to be downloaded only once.

Rescuing systems using the Debian snapshot server

Post date: September 18, 2006, 14:09 Category: System Views: 5974 Comments
Tutorial quote: One of the unofficial Debian project resources which doesn't get the attention it deserves is the Debian Snapshot site. The site contains a mirror of old Debian packages, which can be very useful for system recovery.

In most normal cases you won't ever need to use it, unless you're wanting to compare two different package versions to see changes, or do other non-standard things. However when you do need to use it you'll learn what a big lifesaver it is!

The biggest use for the site, for me, has been for recovering from broken package updates. Whilst these are rare in the Debian Stable and Testing releases they can be an issue when running Debian unstable.

Installing MyDNS-NG & MyDNSConfig On Debian Squeeze

Post date: January 20, 2011, 12:01 Category: Installing Views: 2823 Comments
Tutorial quote: This tutorial will describe how to install and configure MyDNS-NG and MyDNSConfig 3 on Debian Squeeze. MyDNS-NG is a DNS server that uses a MySQL database as backend instead of configuration files. The advantage is that MyDNS simply reads the records from the database, and it does not have to be restarted/reloaded when DNS records change or zones are created/edited/deleted. A secondary nameserver can be easily set up by installing a second instance of MyDNS that accesses the same database or, to be more redundant, uses the MySQL master / slave replication features to replicate the data to the secondary nameserver.
